Everyday Self-reflection from Heidegger to Hamaguchi – Concept Narratives in Film and in Literature
Lecture by Reidar Due, Magdalen College – Oxford University followed by Bodil-Marie Stavning Thomsen’s response. This paper discusses the aesthetic representation of self-reflection within concept narratives, in film and in literature. Based on the philosopher Martin Heidegger’s phenomenology in his work Sein und Zeit (Being and Time, 1927), the paper develops a concept of representation of everyday self-reflection and asks the question: how can a subject of self-reflection be represented aesthetically, in such a way that this subject is not identical with that of a psychological character in a realist novel (or film)? The conceptual novel Abfall für alle, Roman eines Jahres (2003) by Rainald Goetz, presents the self-portrait of a character whose life largely consists of reflections upon the world around him. The Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, in his cycle of five short films Senses (Happy Hour, 2015), develops techniques that were first introduced by the French director Eric Rohmer. They consist in presenting characters who are engaged in self-presentation, while reflecting upon themselves, in the company of others. We may now ask: to what extent is everyday self-reflection governed by norms of truth in these concept narratives? This question leads to a discussion of the concept of truth-saying in the later works of Michel Foucault.
